Native Herbs 3 Pack

$11.99

Bush Tomato, Lemon Myrtle and Wattle Seed (3 x 10g packs).

A great way to try some of the foods that were a staple diet and used for nutritional and medicinal purposes by Australia’s First Nations peoples.

Bush Tomato grows in arid regions of the country. Australia’s First Nations peoples leave the tomatoes on the small bush until they have been sundried. Bush tomatoes are a good source of selenium.

Lemon Myrtle is rich in antioxidants and phenolic compounds. It contains citral which is a powerful antioxidant. Traditionally it was used as a tea/infusion and for medicinal purposes.

Wattle Seed is a good source of protein and fibre and contains no gluten. Traditionally the seed was ground into a flour by First Nations people’s and made into a damper.

Provenance

Our Wattle Seed (Acacia Victoriae) is sourced from a First Nations owned business. We also grow our own wattle seed which we harvest. We also buy some occasionally from a local Riverland grower.

Our Bush Tomato comes from a First Nations grower. We grind and pack the Bush Tomato in our processing shed in Humpty Doo NT.

Our Lemon Myrtle is grown using organic practices in WA which is free from myrtle rust. It is dried in WA and ground and packed by us on site here at Humpty Doo, NT. We pack the Lemon Myrtle in biodegradable packs. Sometimes, if the citral oil content is particularly high, we may need to pack the Lemon Myrtle in a foil lined pack. We also grow our own Lemon Myrtle here in Humpty Doo and process and pack it here. Occasionally if WA has a shortage of supply and we can’t grow enough, we may order from East Coast growers.

Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) has antimicrobial and antifungal properties. It is a source of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, lutein, is rich in phenolic compounds (88.1mg per gallic acid equivalent) and is a great source of calcium. Research has shown that Lemon Myrtle has anti- bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Bush Tomatoes contain iron, folate, potassium and selenium and have a high potassium to sodium ratio of 483. Increasing potassium in the diet helps the kidneys to retain less sodium which helps lower blood pressure. Bush tomatoes also contain zinc, magnesium and calcium. Fresh bush tomatoes contain a lot of Vitamin C but once they are dried, there is little Vitamin C in them. Selenium is necessary for antioxidant enzymes to function and plays an important role in thyroid hormone metabolism and production. It acts as an antioxidant helping to prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals.

Wattle Seed contains 20% protein and is a good source of fibre. Its low glyceamic index means that it is a food that will not give you a sugar spike!

*Always consult your health/medical practitioner before trying new foods.
