Kakadu Plum- What is an antioxidant?

An antioxidant is a naturally occurring substance that can reduce oxidative stress in the body. Many antioxidants are plant-based and are found in vegetables and fruits like Kakadu Plums. To be most effective in maintaining health, antioxidants most likely work with other nutrients contained in plant-based foods.

Antioxidants and oxidative stress

Our body is constantly performing different processes like converting food into energy, exercising etc. These activities produce by-products called free-radicals. Free radicals have a ‘hole’ that they want to fill with an electron and they try to do this by stealing an electron from our cells. This theft can damage our cells. Antioxidants have a free electron which can ‘fill the hole’ in the free radicals so that they won’t damage our cells. When the number of free radicals is too high, they can cause  oxidative stress which can lead to degenerative diseases such as cancer, alzheimers and others.  A good balance of antioxidants and free radicals can help our body to prevent oxidative stress and maintain health.

Plant-based Antioxidants and Kakadu Plums

Many antioxidants are found in plants. They form a part of the plant’s defense systems to keep it healthy. The fruit and vegetables that we eat can contain many different nutrients and antioxidants. Some of the antioxidants in Kakadu Plums are polyphenols such as ellagic acid, flavonoids, Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

Plant-based Antioxidants vs. Antioxidant supplements

Some research has shown that antioxidants are effective in reducing free radicals. However, other research has shown that antioxidant supplements by themselves may not be as effective. It is thought that antioxidants may work with other nutrients in fruits and vegetables to reduce free radicals.
